Bespoke Media Units and Media Walls, Made to Measure
A bespoke media unit is built for one room. Yours. We measure the wall, look at where your TV needs to sit, work out what has to be hidden and what you want on show, then make the whole thing to fit. No gaps at the edges. No trying to make a flat-pack cabinet pretend it was meant for that alcove.
Benton has been doing this since 1986. We're family run, based in Edington in Somerset, and we work with people right across the UK. Media walls, freestanding units, fitted cabinetry around a chimney breast. Whatever the room needs.
The living room is the room you sit in every evening. The furniture in it should suit how you actually live, not whatever the shop happened to have in a box. That is the whole idea behind bespoke.
What we make
Most people come to us with one of a few things in mind.
A full media wall is the big one at the moment. TV mounted or recessed, storage either side, sometimes a recess for an electric fire, cabling run out of sight. Done properly it changes how the whole room feels.
Then there are standalone media units and television cabinets for people who want something handsome that holds the kit without taking over the space. Corner TV units for rooms where the telly has to go in the corner and nothing off the shelf ever fits right. Alcove cabinetry that uses the dead space either side of a chimney breast instead of leaving it awkward and empty.
We build the rest of the room out too when people want it. Bespoke living room storage that runs on past the TV. Bookcases and display shelving. Cabinets carrying the same finish through the whole space so nothing looks bolted on later.
If your living room has a shape that has always been a bit of a problem, that is usually the exact thing bespoke solves.
Fitted or freestanding?
Worth deciding early, because it shapes everything else.
Fitted units are built into the room. They sit tight to the walls, run floor to ceiling if you want, and make the most of every awkward inch. Staying put and want the wall to look like part of the house? Fitted is usually the answer.
Freestanding pieces can move with you. A media unit that comes off the wall and goes in the van the day you move. A bit less scope for hiding cables and filling alcoves, but far more flexible. We make both, and on the home visit we will talk through which suits your plans.
Designed around your space and your equipment
This is where made-to-measure earns its keep.
Cable management is the one people underestimate. Consoles, a soundbar, a router, the box that came with the streaming service nobody remembers signing up for. All of it needs power, airflow and a way to disappear. We plan that in before a single panel is cut, so you are not drilling holes and threading wires through afterwards.
Storage gets the same treatment. Some people want doors on everything. Others want open shelving for records or books and a couple of closed cupboards for the clutter. You tell us how you actually live in the room and we build to that, rather than handing you a fixed layout and hoping it fits your life.
Then there is the room itself. Bay windows. A door that swings back against the wall. Skirting, a picture rail, a radiator sitting exactly where the unit wants to go. Off the shelf furniture pretends none of that exists. We design around all of it.
Awkward walls, sloping ceilings, a chimney breast that isn't quite square. None of it stops a bespoke build. It just becomes part of the design.
What we can say is that you are not picking from three colours and a laminate. The finish is chosen to suit the rest of your room, and we talk that through on the visit.
How it works
We do not have a showroom, and that is on purpose.
Instead you get a free home design visit. Someone comes to you, sees the actual room in the actual light, takes proper measurements and talks through what you are after. Far more useful than standing in a warehouse looking at a unit that will never sit in your house.
From there we design the piece around your room and your kit, you check it over, and once you are happy we make it in the workshop and come back to fit it.
You are not left guessing at any point. If something needs changing before we build, that is far easier to sort on paper than after the panels are cut.

We make bespoke kitchens, fitted wardrobes and home office furniture as well, so a media wall is not a sideline we picked up last year.
